Abacus Finger Counting

Abacus finger counting is the very first topic of Abacus learning. Before you start counting on the Abacus tool, it is suggested to learn counting on fingers through the Abacus way.

The reason for learning Abacus finger counting is that the Abacus tool is also designed like the shape of our hands and once you learn Abacus finger counting, you can easily learn Abacus tool counting in no time.

One thing which is to mandatorily keep in mind while conducting abacus classes is that Abacus is an activity for age 5 to 14 years of children which is why it becomes important to make this activity a fun learning with more practical teaching methods.

Abacus Finger Counting

As in my earlier post (What is Abacus?), I discussed that the abacus is based on visualization concept.

I will also explain abacus finger counting through visualization methods only so that you can remember it for a long time. Let’s start counting on fingers.

All you have to do is using your hands. The right hand will be considered as One’s (1’s) place and the left hand will be considered as Ten’s (10’s) place.

You can make a maximum 99 using both your hands because 2 digit’s highest number is 99. Take your right hand up and start learning from the images below.

You can easily see the images and learn abacus finger counting. Let’s make this abacus finger counting a little more fun through visualization.

Put your right hand up and make 1 as shown in image 1 and say 1 for god. Now, make 2 on your right hand as shown in the image above and say 2 for peace.

Make 3 on your right hand as shown in the image above and say 3 for W (alphabet). Make 4 on your right hand as shown in the image above and say 4 for snake bite.

Make 5 on your right hand using your thumb as shown in the image above and say 5 for all the best.

Make 6 on your right hand as shown in the image above and say 6 for smile.

Make 7 on your right hand as shown in the image above and say 7 for big smile.

Make 8 on your right hand as shown in the image above and say 8 for octopus.

Make 9 on your right hand as shown in the image above and say 9 for wave.

The main reason for relating these numbers to gestures is visualization. This visualization method will help you remember this counting for a long time.

You can make 10 using both your hands because in order to make 10 you will have to make 1 on the left hand as shown in the image above and 0 on the right hand.

To make 11, make 1 on the left hand and 1 on the right hand and so on up to 99.

You can realize that now whenever you have to make a number on your hands, you are creating an image in your mind first and then you are making the number on your fingers.

For example, you can make 78 on your fingers. What you will do is, you will think 7 for big smile and 8 for octopus and then you can easily make 78 on your fingers.

The purpose of this abacus finger counting before learning abacus tool counting is to tell the importance of visualization in abacus.

I hope this post will help you learning abacus finger counting. You can also subscribe to my YouTube channel for all the updates regarding abacus learning.
